When our parents started Soboroong in early 60s they hardly used any chemicals in their farming activities. Partly because they planted mainly hilly paddy and coffee. However, when temperate vegetables were introduced in mid-sixties; the use of chemicals either for fertilizers or insects control were introduced in effort to improve and increase vegetables production both in terms of quality and quantity. 

Fast forward in 1985 as most of us were busy having our own working life, Soboroong were rented out to farmers to do vegetable farming. In 2013, when some of us retired from working life, we decided to terminate the rental agreement and took control of this land. 

When we started developing Soboroong in 2013, we realized that the almost 30 years of active vegetables farming had totally destroyed the quality of the soil. This was evident from the many lorry load of plastics and other non-biodegradable wastes that we uncovered underneath the soil surface. At that time hardly any birds found in Soboroong.

We decided that we wanted Soboroong to be like in the early sixties where air was free of pollutant and where birds were freely flying all over the area. As you see, after about 10 years of hard work; there are many types of plants including eucalyptus trees and many types of local herbs in the vicinity. In addition, now there are many types of birds found in Soboroong.  

This Organic Hut represent our commitment to bringing back “the Soboroong in the sixties”…clean air and home of many local birds and local herbs. Now Soboroong environment is chemical free. Our planting of vegetables are also chemical free. This organic hut produces the organic fertilizers we use in our farming activities. For insect control… we are using natural plants to produce insecticides.
