The Tanga – water storage container

Until early 70s, many kampong people in Kundasang were using “tanga” to fetch and store water. Back then not only it was difficult to get any types of water containers such as pail, basin, drum, water tank etc, but also generally the people lacked the money to buy them.

The water stored in tanga was mainly for drinking and cooking use. Each family house would have up to 10 tanga and normally kept next to the main door of the sulap (house). Getting the tanga filled with water was normally the job of the youngsters in the family.

In those days, instead of playing with computer games using hand phone or laptop, the youngsters were busy helping out their family to do house and farm work including fetching water using tanga from the nearest stream…
