Ginaloh-galoh

Ginaloh-galoh was a ‘larger version basket’ for holding and carrying agricultural produce in the 1960s. Because of the size, it was back-carried.

It was made from sumbiling, a type of bamboo species. When temperate vegetables were first introduced in Kundasang in the 1960s, most of the vegetable farms were not accessible by road. Therefore, farmers used ginaloh-galoh to back-carry temperate vegetables to the old Kundasang shops. From there, the vegetables would be sent to Jesselton (now Kota Kinabalu) by Toyota Jeep.

The ginaloh-galoh could carry between 30 to 70 katties depending on size. From this place - Soboroong, it would take about two hours on foot to the old Kundasang shops.

The ginaloh-galoh would always remind us that while the 60s lacked the road accessibility; we were blessed with unpolluted fresh air thus enable farmers to carry 30 to 70 katties of vegetables and walked for 2 hours with no issue at all…
